Blog Entry #2

In our book, Nichols writes, "An attentive viewer must also be familiar with the repertoire of  choices a director faces to recognize her decisions as choices rather than as simply the product of the camera's mechanical ability to record images." What do you think Nichols is trying to say in this statement and what are your thoughts?
After looking up the definition of repertoire, which is all the plays, songs, dances, etc., that a performer or group of performers knows and can perform, I think that Nichols is trying to say that ultimately the director has the power to create his/her own film.  Depending on the the director's technique or perspective on the piece the film can vary in many ways. If a movie were to be done by a different director, there would be a totally new approach on how the film is produced and portrayed. If you watch a film simply to see how it is mechanically constructed you will see how the directors repertoire shows through. I challenge all of you to watch a movie but instead of watching it for enjoyment, watch it to see how it is constructed.

  1. Lizzy- I agree with your point of view on how much influence the director has on the film. You have a great grasp of what Nichols was saying on how viewers only notice what the film is producing mechanically, not how it is produced behind the camera. It's a challenge to try watching a movie on how it was constructed rather than watching it for enjoyment. Awesome blog. #bloglife

  2. Thanks for the definition of repertoire, wasn't sure of the meaning. I agree that each director has his or her own approach on techniques in filming a movie. I continue to be amazed by the things that have an influence on the way a film is created.

  3. I also love that you looked up the definition! I never even thought to do that! I also love the challenge you presented to us all. I know that it really encouraged me to watch the next movie I see differently. You are definitely right about the different directors having different approaches. I can now see more clearly what Nichols was trying to say. Great Blog !(:

  4. Your completely right when you state how if a new director came in and produced a new movie that, that director could potentially change the way we see film and how we produce film. I think you have a good understanding of the question you where answering and did an excellent job! Good job Lizzy!
